Romans 8

1 Therefore, [there is] now no condemnation (no adjudging guilty of wrong) for those who are in Christ Jesus, who live [and] walk not after the dictates of the flesh, but after the dictates of the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has freed me from the law of sin and of death.

12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.

I sincerely do not know where to begin.

God help me know truth, love truth and speak truth in the midst of deceit. Amen.

Deceit began in my heart, the moment I thought I could do ANYTHING without Christ. I don’t know about you all, but sometimes I find that I don’t need to bother God every 5 seconds, like I have good enough sense from Him, I can use it when I need to…for the little things, at least. The problem is I have a false perception of what is “little”. Anger, forgiveness, cursing, sex, fear, belief, confidence, ….these are BIG things that I have diluted to a diminutive status, so much so that I forget I need to stand next to God, praying at all times for HIS strength to help me, to enable me for success.

I am led to the purpose of this post and that is we have a Helper. The Holy Spirit of God was sent to live inside of every believer to TEACH us and REMIND us of all things. (John 14:26) We left off the last post with Paul and I crying out who will save us from this body, [our flesh that continually disappoints], and we found our answer in Jesus Christ.

In the next couple of posts I want to explore, further, what it means to live our lives THROUGH the Spirit of the living God; How God can enable, facilitate and permit our success before Him; and How we can successfully fight for our new identities in Him and live lives of righteousness before God. He is our Champion.

Before I begin, please read Romans 8:1-15.

You betta had read it! (I just got real country on you, I know, but I’m serious! Read the word first!)

In chapter 7 we were at conflict and confusion about our continual failings before God. We learned that the law of God in the Old Testament, the one Moses received on Mt. Sinai, while it was just and holy, was ineffective in that no one could keep it!!! The old law did not prevent sin it just revealed it!! (For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.) [Romans 8:3] It guided, taught and told us about God’s character and what He wanted from us, but it gave us no energy/power to live it out.

Paul begins, Therefore, as in because of the things I’ve said in chapter 7, we now have NO CONDEMNATION (no adjudging guilty of wrong) for those who are in Christ Jesus. Why? For what? What you mean PAUL!

BECAUSSSSSSEEEEE  THROUGH, (at the hand of, in the name of, supported by, with the assistance of), JESUS CHRIST and the Law of the Spirit I AM MADE FREE FROM the old law of Sin and Death.

***For clarification purposes, the old law was NOT SIN AND DEATH, but brought about sin and death for those who tried to keep it THROUGH (at the hand of, in the  name of, supported by, with the assistance of) THEMSELVES. YOU gon’ learn TODAY! God wants us totally dependent on Him.

What am I really free from?!

  1. Guilt of Sin (vs.1)
    1. Disgrace, Dishonor, Shame
    2.  Which leaves me head down, afraid to seek God for help, afraid for punishment, in CONSTANT FEAR…God is not about that life!
  2. Power of Sin (vs.2)
    1. Control, Dominance, Authorization, Command
    2. God sent His son to be a sin offering, He received the full fury of punishment deserved by a sinner, which we will NEVER RECEIVE because of what Christ did in OUR place.
    3. Those who believe this truth have Christ to thank, because His spirit is our new standard
    4. Sending His own Son in the guise of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, [God] condemned sin in the flesh [subdued, overcame, deprived it of its power over all who accept that sacrifice] vs.3

How is this even possible?!

God sent His son sooo that:

So that the righteous and just requirement of the Law might be fully met in us who live and move not in the ways of the flesh but in the ways of the Spirit [our lives governed not by the standards and according to the dictates of the flesh, but controlled by the Holy Spirit]. Vs.4

Jesus’ accomplishment is mine >GALATIANS 2:20. He fulfilled the righteous requirement of the law by living a SINLESS life, AND NOT ONLY THAT… He took on the punishment and death of the law, which was broken by us. He did that! BECAUSE WE ARE IN HIM (by our BELIEF/FAITH) AND HE LIVES IN US, WE GET THE CREDIT!

I am sorry but this is preposterous. What are you saaaaaaaying! Lol I don’t have to do anything, but believe in the Son of God and I get credit for the righteousness I didn’t earn, but receive freely by FAITH?! (James 2:23) #wheredeydothatat?! God is Good!

sideNOTE: vs. 4 says that this requirement is met in us who LIVE and MOVE [walk, pattern of our life] not in the ways of the flesh, but the spirit. Living and Moving entails that there is a course, a direction and a progression. It entails action. To do this in the spirit requires FAITH, a change of Lifestyle AND a change of mindset (which God will permit).

Yea, but How do I really live this?!

5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

In this verse I have highlighted probably the most important advocate and stumbling block for all of us who are trying to walk this life, dictated by the spirit; the MIND. Constantly God informs us, through His word, that the mind is an important part of our faith.

  1. Stumbling block (Matthew 16:23)
  2. Decision maker (Luke 21:14)
  3. Avenue for doubt (Luke 24:38)
  4. Able to be transformed (Romans  12:2)
  5. Blinded (2 Corinthians 4:4)
  6. Led Astray (2 Corinthians 11:3)
  7. Corrupted  (Titus 1:15)
  8. Needs to be clear (1 Peter 4:7)

What does a clear, transformed, decision making mind do:?! FOLLOW the SPIRIT of CHRIST. In the next post I would like to explore what that looks like for you and I. This post is getting lengthy and I need ya’l to stay with me!

WHYYYYYYYY?!!! *Kenan Voice*

Romans was written by Paul, who is my favorite man of God in the bible. I actually think we would have been friends had I known him way back when. He could have been my husband for all I know! LOL He was stern, but loving. Passionate and zealous for God, yet maintained his relationships with people. He was a mighty good man, with a past worth side-eyeing, but God made him a new creature. Paul is my dude! To the subject at hand….I’m completely, 100%, no doubt about it with Paul and his assertions in Romans 7. I’m just as baffled as he is, why do I do what I don’t want to do?! Let’s explore this chapter.

“For I do not understand my own actions [ I am baffled and bewildered.] I do not practice or accomplish what I wish, but I do the very thing that I loathe [which my moral instinct condems].For what I do is not the good, I want to do, it is no longer I who do it , but it is sin living in me that does it.” Romans 7:15,19

I am a God fearing Woman Sinner. There are some things, which I am not at complete liberty to reveal about myself, through which God has worked, almost completely out of me….yet I creep *cue TLC…I dance*. This thing These things I do, are often times preceded by statements that sound like this: You know you wrong! Whyyyyyy?! Don’t do it, please don’t do it, if one of us goes in then we all go through it (I think that one is the Holy Spirit, definitely ain’t Drake!). These are met by promptings to pray, which I may or may not ignore. If I do follow through they are half-hearted prayers through which I know I’m probably going to end up doing it anyways so… Girl you fake! I feel like a failure.

I’ll just throw it out there….I don’t fully know God [perceive, recognize, understand and am acquainted with Him] 1 John 2:4, but I can say I am getting to know Him more and more everyday. He has transformed me from the inside out in ways where I look back at the old me and I’m like whoooo are you?!! I digress, but ” I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot perform it. [ I have the intention and urge to do what is right, but no power to carry it out].” Romans 7:18 In Romans, Paul explores the differences between life under the law and what a life in Christ offers.

LAW                                                            CHRIST

*Life dictated by Flesh vs. 5 * Life dictated by spirit
*Operated by natural power (wills of flesh) vs. 5 * Operated  by Holy Spirit (promptings of spirit)
*Bears fruit of death vs.9 * Bears fruit of Life
*Reliance on self to carry out; usually ends in failure *Reliance on Christ who enables success
*Helps me recognize that I sin *Offers me salvation, justification and righteousness before God despite my sin
*Sin lives *Sin dies
*Holy, Just and Good *Holy, Just and Good

I’m finding that I am still operating as if the law is my master and not Christ.

Paul pretty much has an epiphany towards the end of Romans chapter 7, through which I also delight myself in and that is I have two opposing spirits dwelling within me; Sin and the Holy Spirit [ Law of God]. My new nature–Christ which now lives inside of me (Holy Spirit), supports and finds joy in God’s law, BUT my flesh [body, wills of flesh] finds itself subjected to an opposing set of evil demands–ie. the things I do in secret, which I am ashamed of, in light of my status as CHRISTIAN.

I join Paul, crying out O unhappy and pitiable and wretched man girl get your life! Who will release me from this body of death?! Romans 7:24 We rejoice together saying Thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. I have a deliverer who, by His Spirit, offers life and freedom from this bondage of sin!

I’m trying to do right ya’l. Next post will be an exploration of Romans 8, which discusses this Life through the Spirit!!!
